We highlighted Purdue Extension in Warrick County at our 2011 Annual meeting. During the meeting we celebrated a year of great 4-H, Agricultural and Natural resources, and Health and Human Services programming. During 2011 Purdue Extension in Warrick County provided 1200 hours of education to the citizens of Warrick County.

Jim Mintert, Associate Director for Purdue Extension, did a great job speaking about Purdue Extension Making a Difference.

We also played Fruit and Veggie UNO to highlight the Eat Your Way to Better Health program started in Warrick County this year.

A big thanks to ALCOA Warrick Operations for selecting Warrick County 4-H for their Day of Service. Fourteen engineers from ALCOA Warrick Operations volunteered their resources to rebuild and expand the 4-H Council Stand Deck located on the south side of the building.

The Fab Products Engineering team worked on the project from start to finish. The team provided the design work and materials which resulted in 98 hours spent constructing the deck.

Their volunteer work has resulted in a $3000 ALCOA Foundation ACTION grant for Warrick County 4-H. We sincerely appreciate this high level of support from ALCOA Warrick Operations.

Warrick County is Wired for Wind

On October 5th, Warrick County celebrated National 4-H Youth Science Day (NYSD). Students at Boonville Middle School and Tennyson Elementary celebrated the day by participating in the 2011 NYSD experiment: Wired for Wind.

Wired for Wind explored wind energy and the engineering behind the development of wind turbines. The students were able to design wind turbines and test their turbines for performance.

This September, please prepare in the event you must go for three days without power, water service, access to a grocery or other local services. There are three steps you can follow:

1. Prepare a Kit: Your kit should contain enough items for those in your care. The kit should include water, food that is non-perishable, first aid, prescriptions, flashlight, and a battery operated radio. You can visit Ready.gov for a kit checklist.

2. Make a Plan: Agree on an emergency plan with those in your care. You may also want to work with neighbors to build a neighborhood/community plan. Sample plans can be found at Ready.gov.

3. Be Informed: Free information is available to you at your local fire departments, local emergency management agency and your county Extension office. Also, the Extension Disaster Education Network is a great source for emergency preparedness.

Beginner's Guide to Grant Writing Workshops

The "Beginners Guide to Grant Writing" is a 2-day workshop. Day One covers the basics about how to write a grant and Day Two, which occurs a few weeks later, brings the class back together to answer questions, continue refining the grant requests and finding out about funding sources. The cost of the class is $150 which includes a workbook and materials plus lunch and snacks both days. Degonia 4-H club wins 4-H 60 Challenge

We are excited to announce Degonia 4-H club won the Warrick County 4-H 60 challenge. The Warrick County 4-H 60 challenge was our campaign to promote 60 minutes of physical activity most days. The Degonia 4-H club logged 56,178 minutes of physical activity from April through July.

Animals at the 4-H Fair

4-H has always involved animals; therefore animal welfare is an important part of the 4-H program.

Part of practicing good animal welfare is looking out for the welfare of all animals. If you visit the Warrick County 4-H fair this week, you will see countless examples of 4-H members practicing animal welfare.

With the high temperatures this week, 4-H members are taking precautions against the heat by ensuring their animals are staying cool and comfortable. Just as families take care of the elderly who might become sick during heat waves, 4-H members offer the best care they can for their animals. The responsibility 4-H members undertake with their animals allows them to grow into caring and responsible adults.

We kicked off our 2011 Warrick County 4-H Camp on Thursday. We had great weather for our first day of camp. Our campers were kept busy with group meetings, line dancing, swimming, and getting settled into their dorms. All the campers and counselors are having fun with our "Down on the Farm" theme.

Results of a Tufts University Study (The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development) released today indicate that 4-H members when compared to other youth are: 1. More likely to spend time being phsically active; 2. Two times less likely to engage in drug use; 3. Two times less likely to use ciggarettes or alcohol. Warrick County was a site for the "The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development". For more information on the findings of this study go to 4-H.org and click on "about 4-H". Lynnville Students are Eating Their Way to Better Health

This program is taught by Purdue Extension staff and the Warrick County Master Gardeners and serves to help youth to improve their eating habits while also learning the science behind growing vegetables.

4-H 60 Challenge Set to Launch April 1

The 4-H 60 Challenge will begin in April and end at the conclusion of the 4-H fair in July. During this time frame, 4-H families are encouraged to complete at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Each person will self report their minutes of exercise on our website.

The 4-H club with the highest number of minutes per member will receive a 100 dollar award from the 4-H Council. Look for information about the 4-H 60 challenge in your mail box and on our website.

Jelly Genes at Tennyson

We concluded the 4-H science series at Tennyson After school with a DNA activity. To introduce the topic of DNA to the students, we practiced making DNA stands out of jelly and crackers.

The process of making jelly cracker sandwiches helped to teach how genes come together to make DNA strands.

Warrick County 4-H Member Wins Citizenship Award

Katelyn Mehling, a member of Lakeside 4-H club, was recently recognized for her 4-H citizenship, leadership and community service activities by the Indiana Sons of the American Revolution.

Katelyn is currently serving as president of the Lakeside 4-H club and as treasurer of 4-H Jr. Leaders. She has also recently started an after-school language program at St. John's Elementary.

The Tennyson Ice Cream Shop

Our Scientists at Tennyson Elementary were food engineers this week. Using soy milk, we made soy ice cream.

Step 1: Our food engineers mixed vanilla (or chocolate) soy milk with 1 Tbs of sugar.

Step 2: Our food engineers put their milk mixture into ice. (the ice included a sprinkle of ice cream salt)

Step 3: Shake until milk mixture thickens and enjoy a tasty treat.

This was a great way to help children understand the benefits of soy, especially to those who cannot have lactose in their diets.

Essay Contest: "Our Food, Our Farmers"

4-H Science and Biofuels

This week students at the Tennyson Elementary After school site conducted biofuels experiments using yeast, corn syrup and sugar.

This experiment helps to teach youth about alternative energy sources that are derived from plant material such as corn, sorghum or switchgrass.

Flood Recovery

Although we are in the midst of a brutally cold winter in Southwestern Indiana, in a few months our wonderful spring weather. Spring in Indiana brings us flowers, but it also brings us rain. The rain combined with our proximity to the Ohio river often leaves us with flooding. The Extension Disaster Education Network has a new tutorial on flood recovery to help flood victims return to their homes safely after a flood.

What's Buggin' You?

At the January Exploring 4-H meeting, we had a great time with bugs! We made caterpillars and spiders. We also learned how we can learn more about entomology through 4-H.

Exploring 4-H is a program for youth in grades K-2. Exploring 4-H used hands-on teaching to introduce youth to science, horticulture, healthy eating and many other topics. Contact us for more information.

New Vitamin D Recommendations

Research shows that vitamin D may play a role in lowering the risk of certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, immune and infectious disorders, physical performance and some autoimmune diseases. Engage in outdoor activity whenever possible and let the sun work its magic. Just 20 minutes of direct sunlight (prior to applying sunscreen) will stimulate adequate vitamin D production in individuals under age 70.

Help Your Kids Have a Healthy Holiday

Eat Right

- Set a good example for children by eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with meals or as snacks.

- Let children decide on the dinner vegetables or what goes into salads.

- Offer children a choice of fruits for lunch.

- Use cut-up vegetables as part of afternoon snacks.

- Let children select and help prepare a whole grain side dish.

- While shopping, allow children to pick a new fruit or vegetable to try later at home.

- Decorate plates or serving dishes with fruit slices.

Be Physically Active

- Give gifts that encourage physical activity - active games or sporting equipment.

- Be active and get your family to join you. Have fun together. Play with the kids or pets. Go for a walk, tumble in the leaves, or play catch.

- Instead of sitting through TV commercials, get up and move. Remember to limit TV watching and computer time.

- Depending on their age, children can help shop for, clean, peel, or cut up fruits and vegetables.

Mallory Wood Honored

When you think Miss America what comes to mind? 4-H!!!!! No, well it should. Katie Stamm, former Miss America, is an Indiana 4-H alumni.

It is with MUCH excitement that Mallory Wood, a Warrick County 4-H member, was recently honored with a scholarship given in Katie Stamm's name. The scholarship recognizes Mallory for her exemplary 4-H accomplishments. Congratulations Mallory!

Dining with Diabetes

Dining with Diabetes four part series will begin on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the St. Mary's Warrick Hospital, Phillips Room at 10a.m. This program series includes lunch and all materials and recipes. This is a cooking school for diabetics or those who care for them. Educational programs each Tuesday will inform the group on various aspects related to Diabetes. During October, Warrick County youth at St. John's Elementary and Boonville Middle School will join young people across the nation as part of 4-H National Youth Science Day. Youth will be conducting the same experiment:4-H2o.

"Making A Difference" Conference scheduled for Saturday, October 30th at Ivy Tech Community College Campus, Evansville, IN sponsored by Purdue Extension. The conference will begin with registration at 8:30am CDT and the first concurrent session will begin at 9:00am. The program will include 12 concurrent sessions and a keynote as well as booth presentations throughout the day. The conference will end at 2:30pm and does also feature two tours of the Ronald McDonald house. Registrations are being taken at Purdue Extension in Vanderburgh County, 13301 Darmstadt Rd., Evansville IN 47725 and will be $15 which includes lunch. Walks Across Indiana

Walks Across Indiana 5KRun/Walk will be held in Warrick County on October 2, 2010 at the Warrick County 4-H Fairgrounds, 133 E. Old Degonia Rd., Boonville, IN beginning at 9:00am (CDT). All proceeds will benefit Helping Hands of Warrick County. INShape Indiana is a sponsor and supporter of Walks Across Indiana along with Purdue University Extension. The Warrick County 4-H Fair is less than 2 weeks away. This time of year brings lots of fun and last minute preparation for 4-H Exhibits. As you work on posters, here are some things to think about.

Know your 4-H project requirements that are found in the Warrick County 4-H Handbook.

Look at resource books and websites related to the subject. When using websites make sure the information is from a reliable source.

Get ideas from others

When visiting other fairs, look at the exhibits but DO NOT COPY.

Always cite your sources. For posters, you can list your sources on the back of the poster.

Purdue Home & Family Conference

Three Warrick County Extension Homemakers attended Purdue Home and Family Conference in June. Terri Dicus, County Vice President, attended as recipient of the I LEAD scholarship award from the Daisy Maes and Friends Club. She also participated in the Sew Now Style Show and entered a silent auction item from Warrick County to help raise funds for the Indiana Extension Homemaker Association. Della Shiver, incoming County Treasurer, also attended from the Paradise Club. Linda Shaw, county First Timer award winner and president of the Friends Night Out Club, also attended. Janet Turner, Country Friends Club, submitted her County winning Cultural Arts Needlework picture, representing Warrick County.

Purdue Helps Families Stretch Dollars

Last week marked the launching of the Purdue Dollar Stretcher Program in Warrick County. The Purdue Dollar Stretcher program is a finanacial simulation for families. The program is hands-on and is designed to help families plug spending leaks and adapt to our changing economy. The Castle Community 4-H Club hosted the program at their June meeting. Thanks to the 4-H Club members and their parents for participating in this important program.

4-H: No Animals Required

Last week marked the annual 4-H Speech and Demo contest. We heard 10 speeches and 10 demos, and they were all wonderful. So, why blog about this event and not others? Here are some reasons:

1. Many people associate 4-H with animals. Frequently, when I tell people what I do as a career I hear "4-H, that's that thing you have to have animals to be in". NOT TRUE!

2. Everyone needs communication skills! We use them every day to communicate with family members, co-workers, and teachers.

3. 4-H allows youth to develop communication skills in a safe environment. Last week, I heard 2 third grade youth clearly explain how they benefit from 4-H community service projects to anaudience of about 25 people. WOW!

4. Employers hire employees that can communicate. The ability to communicate the written and verbal word often are cited as one of the top skills employers desire.

4-H fosters life skills. This event reminded me how important speech and demonstration contests are, and I am so glad we have one in Warrick County with such great participation. All done without animals!

March is National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is celebrated in the month of March each year. In recognition, a Fruit and Vegetable Challenge, to increase consumption of produce, would be a great goal for all of us. Challenge yourself to consume at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. Plan a variety of fruits and vegetable consumption daily including dark green and orange/yellow produce. Fruits and vegetables aid in reducing the onset of a variety of diseases prevalent in our society including some forms of cancer. Make sure you present yourself appropriately to all your family members by serving as a role model in enjoying fruits and vegetables at mealtimes. Youth today do not eat enough fruits and vegetables and should be encouraged at a young age. Try new fruits and vegetables you have not tried before and prepare them in differnt forms. For example, cooked or raw vegetables. Fruits and vegetables also supply our bodies with plenty of fiber. Set your fruit and vegetable consumption goal today!

Nicky and King Ralph have joined the staff for an upcoming program entitled "Munchy Adventures" that will teach youth about small pet care and nutrition.

As you can see... Nicky is very health conscious and enjoys spending time in the wheel getting his workout....

King Ralph on the other hand is more interested in the munchies.

Thanksgiving Walk

For those who are able, a short after Thanksgiving Dinner walk can be beneficial. Try walking again on Friday or Saturday over the holiday weekend. Walking is a great time to talk about family traditions, expectations for the next holiday season, letters to Santa, and to reduce stress (as well as burn calories). A recently released study by the Center for Disease Control found that even a short amount of time spent each week in moderate intensity physical activity can reduce the incidence of color cancer, breast cancer, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Encourage your family members in taking a walk over your Thanksgiving Holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Five Things to Resist Doing in a Turbulant Economy (NEFE)

1. Don't borrow money to continue your current lifestyle
2. Avoid pulling out funds or taking a loan from your 401(k). Even more important, you should continue making contributions into it. If you're nervous about the ups and downs of the stock market, consider changing your allocation strategy, but stay diversified.
3. Even if you're tempted by low interest rates, avoid borrowing against your home equity to fund current expenses. The last thing you need right now is more debt. Another reason to avoid this type of lending is that your home could potentially devalue as a result of the soft housing market.
4. When the going gets tough, the tough turn to retail therapy and that is not a good philosophy in uncertain economic times. This would be an excellent time to re-evaluate your spending habits and avoid activities that cost money to make you feel better. Before shopping, make a list of only items you need and stick to it. Also delay purchase decisions on anything other than routine items in your budget for at least 48 hours to be certain you need them.
5. Avoid turning to credit for unexpected expenses while you have savings in the bank. Credit card rates are in the double digits, while interest on savings in in the low single digits. Why would you want to "give away" 15 percent or more of your spendable income to credit card interest? If you have not already done so, now is an ideal time to start to build an emergency savings.

Warrick County Farmer's Market

This past Monday a small group interested in starting a farmer's market in Warrick County met at the 4H Fairgrounds. Discussion at the meeting included possible locations, times, and vendors. The next meeting will be held on November 10th at the 4H Fairgrounds in the Alcoa building at 4pm. The group will further discuss possible meeting locations and draft by-laws for the farmers market. Dining with Diabetes Starting in December

A "Dining with Diabetes" cooking school is scheduled for December 2 and 9, 2008. Please find a registration form on the Warrick County CES website located at www.extension.purdue.edu/warrick. The cost is $20 per person which includes lunch each day or $30 per couple. The program will begin at 10:30a.m. and will be held in the Phillips Room at the St. Mary's Warrick Hospital in Boonville.
